Endodontic treatment on an irritated tooth can mean the difference between preserving it and losing it.

At the office of Apex Endodontics, we utilize advanced technology to plan and perform procedures with the utmost precision. Every patient is unique and, depending on the complexities particular to a tooth, we use a variety of high-precision tools to gently and safely carry out treatment.

Here are some common symptoms, possible causes and steps to take to ease or eliminate the discomfort from an ailing tooth.

Indicator: A fleeting sensitivity to hot or cold foods and beverages.

Potential problems: Unless the sensitivity lasts up to two days, it’s probably not a serious issue. You could have some minor tooth decay, a loose filling, or small areas of the root surface exposed by gum recession.

Steps to take: Use a toothpaste tailored for sensitive teeth and a toothbrush with soft or extra-soft bristles. Brush in up-and-down motions rather than side-to-side, which erodes exposed root surfaces. If the sensitivity continues, see a dentist.

Indicator: One or more teeth are sensitive to hot and cold foods and beverages following dental treatment.

Potential problem: The work could have temporarily stirred up the pulp in the treated tooth and sparked peripheral pain.

Steps to take: If the soreness hasn’t gone away or has gotten worse in the following three weeks, see an endodontist, who will investigate the matter.

Indicator: A sharp pain when you clench your teeth or eat.

Potential problems: This profound sign might be due to decay, or a tooth with a crack or loose filling. The tooth’s pulp may also be marred.

Steps to take: See your dentist right away. If the pulp is indeed damaged, he (or she) will refer you to an endodontist, who will perform root canal therapy on the tooth.

Indicators: An intense toothache or gum pain, a swollen face or jaw, a foul taste, an inflamed area in your mouth, a fever and difficulty opening your mouth.

Potential problem: An abscessed tooth may have caused a pocket of pus from a bacterial infection to formin the encircling bone and tissue.

Steps to take: See an endodontist immediately. He will relieve the pain and try to save the tooth.

Don’t hesitate to come to Apex Endodontics. We can help restore you to good oral health. Our goal is to offer a clear picture of all the options available to you and deliver the results you expect. For more information or to make an appointment, please call us today.
